I’m sure you’ve heard the story of the Three Wise Men bringing baby Jesus gifts of Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh? But what are Frankincense and Myrrh and how are they used?

Frankincense and Myrrh have been used for millennia to combat common health problems. The time of Christ is said to be around the year 5 BC, and both oils have been used for centuries even beyond that. (source)

On coming to the house, they saw the Child with His mother Mary, and they fell down and worshiped Him. Then they opened their treasures and presented Him with gifts of Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh.

– Matthew 2:11

Is the physiology of the modern human species so different than our ancestors’? Why wouldn’t the same remedies applied by famed herbalists, Hildegard of Bingen in the 10th century or Nicholas Culpeper of the 17th, still serve us well today?

Well they DO still serve us well! Modern research regularly validates their innate therapeutic properties and more and more people are rediscovering their beautiful and regenerative healing capabilities.

For thousands and thousands of years nearly all ancient religions have used frankincense in their spiritual practices and religious ceremonies including ancient Egyptians, Greeks, Romans, Christians, Jews, Muslims, Hindus and Buddhists.

Frankincense and Myrrh were extensively used in burial rituals as an embalming material, an offering to the departed and as a means to cover the odor of the dead body.

The Roman emperor, Nero, burned an entire year’s harvest of Frankincense at the funeral of his favorite mistress.

Frankincense has traditionally been used as a remedy for a wide variety of afflictions, including ulcers, hypertension, nausea, fever, indigestion, chest coughs and post-childbirth recovery.

Both Frankincense and Myrrh come from tree resins. Careful incisions are made in the trees at key times of year, and the sap slowly pours out. (Kind of like how we tap Maple trees here in North America to make Maple Syrup.) Once the resin dries and hardens it is ready to be harvested.

Tapping generally occurs from January to March and from August to October. After five or six years, the trees that were previously tapped are given rest and the harvest moves on to a new set of trees.
